Slains School

At Slains our Bairns brains grow

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), in Article 28, states that every child has a right to an education. At Slains School we believe an education is all about growing our brains, which is why the Vision, our pupils recently developed, states, "At Slains our Bairns brains grow".

How are we growing our brains? Our brains make new connections as we learn new things and these get stronger the more we practice that new learning. As a result we are always encouraging pupils to challenge themselves to learn new skills, reflect on what they have learned and see how their learning applies in real life contexts.

In order to help our pupils develop these characteristics, Slains School has embarked on a journey which includes learning through play (UNCRC Article 31) and providing children with a say in how and what they learn.

Our school values, help them aspire toward this aim by giving them responsibility for engaging in their learning to the very best of their abilities. Encouraging them to be creative, both in the way they learn and to explore and experiment as they learn. Through careful nurturing in school, and at home, pupils are imbued with the confidence they need to persevere and overcome challenges. Every pupil recognizes how important it is to be included, as this helps everyone enjoy being at school which in turn leads to them build the self-esteem of everyone, giving them the best opportunity to learn effectively. Finally, by being respectful to each other we develop positive relationships, allowing us to collaborate in all our learning experiences (UNCRC Article 29).

Ultimately, we aim to provide an education which helps each child achieve their potential, while equipping them with the knowledge and skills they require to care for themselves, respect others and succeed in an ever-changing world.
